English River secondary school’s art teacher Roxy Athanase and three of his students – Louys Belle, Stan Leon and Nickella Tirant – painted 10 watercolours of iconic imagery from around the resort.
This project started in May this year and Mr Athanase chose his best students to take photos of the hotel and draw or paint the ones they preferred.
Their artwork has now been turned into a series of complementary postcards which are being given to all hotel guests as part of their nightly turndown service and on the back of the postcards credit is given to the artists.
Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St Ange officially unveiled the postcard project on Wednesday in the presence of H Resort general manager Dominique Hebert, English River deputy head teacher Ramona Esparon, Mr Athanase, the students and hotel staff.
To celebrate Festival Kreol there is also an exhibition in the main lobby of the H Resort to promote the artwork of local artists such as Michael Adams and Antonio Filippin.
Mr Hebert said his hotel has a 101% occupancy rate which gives great visibility to the artists.
“This also creates an opportunity for the younger and older artists to send their work out into the international world and you never know in 30 years one of these students will be famous,” he said.
Minister St Ange said this is the perfect example of crossover between culture and tourism which is why it brings professional artists like the teacher and the students who aspire to be artists in the long run.
He congratulated the students by saying “today you are studying and you will soon realise that you will never stop bettering what you do to make higher levels of artwork.”
He also congratulated H Resort as they were not shy to use the work done by the students and the teacher.
“They are now part of the history of H Resort, the art of our country and they will mark it forever,” he said.
He also commended the hotel for displaying the other artwork for the travelling public to see.
“Otherwise they have to go to a gallery which most are privately owned, but now they have been put in a lobby of a major hotel and they get this exposure,” he said.
