mandolinLocal mandolin player Meggy Sodie Marie in collaboration with the National Conservatoire of Performing Arts (NCPA) led a mandolin workshop on Thursday.

Six people took part in the class conducted at the Theatre des Palmes.

They learned about the origin of the mandolin, types of mandolin and how it is played.

A mandolin is a musical instrument in the lute family and is usually plucked with a plectrum or pick.

It commonly has four courses of doubled metal strings tuned in unison (8 strings), although five (10 strings) and six (12 strings) course versions also exist.

The courses are normally tuned in a succession of perfect fifths. It is the soprano member of a family that includes the mandola, octave mandolin, mandocello and mandobass.

There are many styles of mandolin, but three are common  ̶  the Neapolitan or round-backed mandolin, the carved-top mandolin and the flat-backed mandolin.

The head of the School of Music Jerry Souris said it’s unfortunate that there is little interest among the youth to learn to play this exquisite instrument.

“Our intention is to teach the youth instruments which are used to play traditional music so that it does not die out. This is the first mandolin class held this year and other classes on different instruments will be done along the course of the year by using the knowledge of the players to show others who are interested,” he said.
