1itFourteen disabled persons are taking part in a basic IT training to encourage them to be more independent and be better equipped for employment.

The two-week training has been organised by the National Council for the Disabled (NCFD) in collaboration with the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) for people with disabilities.

The workshop, which was officially opened last week, will run until September 2 at the Youth Centre at English River.

The executive secretary of NCFD, Celine Fanchette, stated that each vacation, NCFD tries to give the disabled persons skills that will benefit them in society.

Our mandate is to train people with disabilities for them to be better equipped for employment or to develop life skills. We will always provide that kind of training for them. IT is a tool that is very important for employment,” she said.

The training consists of learning how to use Microsoft Office, Power Point, create an email, and create a Facebook profile and how to safely browse on the internet.

2itThe director for youth support services and SNYC counsellor Beryl Dodin added that such training will allow the disabled to be more independent in life.

“They are learning basic computing such as Microsoft word, Cyber Safety, Power Point. We are also teaching them how to be safe online. We are also teaching them how to create their curriculum vitae (CV). Those kinds of training will help them to be more confident in life, and provide them with the skills that they will need in life and for their personal development. Disabled people have lots of potential, and empowering them in activities they can do really brings remarkable changes in them,” she said.

At the end of the training the participants will receive a certificate that will enable them to be better equipped for employment.
