DSC_8715The Small Enterprise Promotion Agency’s (Senpa) 12th anniversary celebrations ended on a good note with the re-opening of the Artisans des Iles airport shop on Friday.

The Minister for Investment, Entrepreneurship Development and Business Innovation Michael Benstrong and general manager of operation (GMO) Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) Wilfred Focktave joined together for a symbolic ribbon-cutting to officially re-open the shop in the departure lounge.

Senpa’s chief executive (CEO) Penny Belmont joined them in the unveiling of the Praslin project plans for 20 new kiosks to benefit artisans of this island.

In 2007, Senpa opened two shops, one at Camion Hall and the other at the airport, to provide sales outlets for local artisans.

In June the shop at the airport closed down for renovations.

Minister Benstrong said the mission on which Senpa has embarked is very important for our local artisans as it provides them with a new outlet to display their skills, innovative ideas and artwork to the eye of tourists and locals alike.

He noted that this boutique should have the highest quality products as the tourists and Seychellois expect the best and nothing less.

“I’m appealing to the Senpa team to continue promoting good quality and innovative products which can make a difference in the duty free shop at the airport,” he said.

The minister also pointed out that a project is being initiated to deal with packaging which is somewhat of an expense for many entrepreneurs in Seychelles.

Ms Belmont said: “When we first started we had 49 clients and today we have 197 artisans. The figure of over 100% increase speaks for itself.”

She thanked all those who gave their time and effort to help with the renovation in a hurdle of a month.

“This successful outcome, the result of all your hard work and dedication, is down to you and thank you for the pleasure and privilege of working with you,” she said enthusiastically.

The shop has been designed by Ron Felix and Richard Hoareau.

Mr Focktave said the new Artisan des Iles outlet brings a ‘Creole feel’ into the lounge with its wooden architecture and setup that is complemented by a range of authentic products which have been designed and manufactured by the talented minds and hands of our Seychellois.

“Such an initiative is in line with the core values of the SCAA, in our commitment to put the interest of Seychelles and its people first, in providing equal opportunity for everyone and by investing in our community,” he said.

He noted that the working relationship between Senpa and SCAA will be taken to new heights as they seek to invigorate Praslin Airport with more business opportunities.

The guests were entertained by young musicians Isham Rath and Paul Gedeon.
