youngSeychellois delegates happy with experience gained

The two Seychellois who took part in the Young Leaders Initiative Programme for Africa (Yali) are back home happy with the experience they have gained.

Chet Hoareau from the Business and Accounting Centre followed the civic education programme while Delroy Finesse, owner of UP Studio, completed the business and entrepreneurship course at the Regional Leadership Centre for Southern Africa (RLC SA), under the auspices of the University of South Africa (Unisa).

Yali, which was launched by the president of the United States Barack Obama as a signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders, is heavily influenced by the developmental, political and economic dynamics of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

RLC SA on its part aims at developing young African leaders in business and entrepreneurship development, civic leadership and public management and governance through a hybrid of innovative and complementary approaches that include contact sessions, online mentoring, online self-paced tuition, industry placements and experiential learning.

According to Chet Hoareau, the programme is an excellent avenue for young people in the region to share and also to develop their leadership skills.

“I took the civic leadership course because I feel there is a necessity for me as a young person to play a greater role in the public affairs of our country, through our civic engagement as young citizens,” says Chet.

On his part, Delroy Finesse says there is currently a huge dynamism among the young people to venture in business and that this is a positive sign for our country.

“An association called ‘AYES’ (Association for Young Entrepreneurs Seychelles) was launched last year with the aim of helping young people in the business sector. Young people can benefit from such association and network,” he says.

Delroy, who is also the secretary of AYES, has thanked Christopher Lespoir and Oliver Bastienne, his mentors, who he says have both been of great support.

Both Chet and Delroy are now working on their project as part of their course.  The application for the next Young Leader’s Initiative for Africa is open for young people aged 18-35 years until May 27, 2016.
